According to the agreed Working Plan 2006-2010 between Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia and UNICEF and the Annual Working Plan was performed monitoring of iodized salt in the unit trade facilities during 15 August to 30 December 2007 by the National Service of Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection.
In the frames of the project was performed the following:
Analyze of the documents regarding iodized salt;
Was elaborated and issued appropriate methodical instructions for monitoring;
Training was held for responsible staff;
According to the working plan was conducted fast test of 1014 unit iodized salt;
124 Samples were tested in laboratory;
Monitoring results was assessed on the basis of iodized salt monitoring program. The results are following:
Import of iodized salt in Georgia is conducted in such amount to fulfill potential request of the population (4-5 Kg. Salt per capita);
41,32% of tested samples taken in 10 regions of Georgia have negative reaction during testing;
88% of laboratory tested iodized salt samples contain the low iodine doze that do not meet the Georgian Standards in force;
Were elaborated appropriate recommendations for resolving existing problems;
Was elaborated final report on the monitoring program of iodized salt. The final conference is planned. The participants of the conference will be following parts:

Health protection committee of the parliament of Georgia
